Schloss Börln

Welcome to the Homepage of Schloss Börln, Clara-Zetkin-Strasse 1,  D-04774 Dahlen OT Börln, Free State of Saxony, Germany.

Schloss Börln is a fine example of a late baroque building. It stands on the original site of a moated fort. Parts of the moat, which is protected by the Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte (State Museum for Ancient History) are still filled with water and the remainder, though laid dry, is well preserved. The original manor house which was lived in by the Lessor of the Estate, coach house, stables, orangery, ice cellar, water mill and well house are still extant.

Of especial interest is an old chapel which contains an ancient healing well and is under restoration for use by pilgrims who are on their way to the St. James Pilgrims' Way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. There lie the remains  of the Apostle James in a silver casket in the crypt of the cathedral.

Schloss Börln was owned by various aristocrats until 1945 when the invading Soviet army transported Julius Graf Zech von Burkersroda to Bautzen where he was murdered. The Rittergut Börln, including the castle and everything in it, was expropriated and divided up between the state and "new farmers", many of them exiles from the Eastern Provinces of the former German Empire. Between 1945 and 2002 the castle was a combination of first a school and retirement home and latterly the "Feierabendheim" retirement home.

On 22 July 2003 Schloss Börln was sold by the state to a private investor, Roderick Hinkel, who has his roots in the area - his von Minckwitz www.vonminckwitz.de ancestors built nearby castles Dornreichenbach www.schlossdornreichenbach.com and Trebsen. Together with the former "English Gardens" the castle will be restored to their former glory.

Although Schloss Börln will once again be a private residence, it is also be used for music concerts, art exhibitions and many cultural events. Schloss Börln is the seat of Bucklands International Consulting GmbH (www.bucklands.de), a company which specialises in attracting investors to the region and further afield.
